I am intrigued with negative space and have felt a need to bring its energy forward. In my quest to make line and space resonate, I began to use trees as my primary subject. When combined with texture and what has been referred to as a Fauvistic approach to color, these elements resonate against each other, creating a certain tension and implied dimension.

While color remains a strong component, line and shape also fascinate me. By simplifying the overall image and by examining the organic form from a close up perspective, the visual tension remains, even in a minimalist work. The foreground and background are still equally dependent on the other. And the dynamic is still so interesting to me.

My preferred medium of choice is still paint. As I have experimented with scale and materials, and my newest work is somewhat inspired by printmaking, I get the greatest pleasure from layers of pigment. Especially with a more limited palette, the creation of texture, for me, becomes very important. Texture allows the organic to come forth. It gives it a quiet power.

My goal is not to make beautiful works about nature. I may have thought that was what I was doing at one point. Instead I've come to realize that I am creating self-portraits, using nature as my guise. I make the work I like to look at, live with and that which tells me something interesting or provocative during the process or by the time it is finished. I'm not interested in making any kind of statement, political or otherwise. I think I may be creating an experience. That's a guess at this point. I'll know more down the road of this journey.
